What does maternity leave pay on 900?
An employee on a monthly wage of 900 KWD (700 basic + 200 allowances) starts her maternity leave.
- Length of the leave: 70 paid days under Article 24
- Daily wage: 900 ÷ 30 = 30 KWD
- Maternity leave pay: 70 × 30 = 2,100 KWD
The employee is owed 2,100 KWD for her maternity leave, and the 70 days are not deducted from her annual or sick leave.
How long is maternity leave, and what may follow it?
Under Article 24 of Private Sector Labour Law No. 6 of 2010, a pregnant worker is entitled to seventy days of paid maternity leave, not taken from her other leave, provided the birth takes place within them. The text sets no length of service and does not say how much of the leave comes before the birth.
The leave is paid on the wage as Article 55 defines it: the basic wage plus the elements in the contract and anything paid regularly as an allowance. The calculator divides the monthly wage by 30 to get the daily wage, a convention the article does not state, and multiplies it by 70 days.
After the maternity leave ends, the employer may, at her request, grant unpaid leave of up to four months for childcare, which is the employer's to grant rather than her right. The employer may not end her service during the maternity leave, or while she is off with an illness a medical certificate shows was caused by the pregnancy or birth. On her return she gets two hours for nursing during working time under Article 25.
- Length of the leave: 70 paid days, not taken from other leave
- No service condition, and the birth must take place within the 70 days
- Daily wage = comprehensive monthly wage (basic + regular allowances) ÷ 30
- After it: up to 4 months unpaid if the employer agrees to her request
