What do 30 sick days pay on 900?

An employee on a monthly wage of 900 KWD (700 basic + 200 allowances) is off sick for 30 days, with no sick leave taken earlier in the year.

  1. Daily wage: 900 ÷ 30 = 30 KWD
  2. The first 15 days at full pay: 15 × 30 = 450 KWD
  3. The next ten days at three quarters of the wage: 10 × 30 × 75% = 225 KWD, then 5 days at half pay: 5 × 30 × 50% = 75 KWD
  4. Total: 450 + 225 + 75 = 750 KWD

The employee is owed 750 KWD for the sick leave. Five days of the half-pay band remain this year, then 10 days at a quarter of the wage and 30 days unpaid.

What are the five sick leave bands, and which wage pays them?

Under Article 69 of Private Sector Labour Law No. 6 of 2010, a worker is entitled each year to sick leave in five bands: fifteen days at full pay, then ten days at three quarters of the wage, then ten days at half, then ten days at a quarter, then thirty days without pay, 75 days in all.

The illness is proved by a certificate from the doctor appointed by the employer or from the doctor in charge at the government health unit, and if there is a dispute over the leave or its length, the government doctor's certificate prevails. Chronic illnesses are set apart by a decision of the competent minister naming them.

The leave is paid on the wage as Article 55 defines it: the basic wage plus the elements in the contract and anything paid regularly as an allowance. The calculator divides the monthly wage by 30 to get the daily wage, a convention the article does not state, then places the days of your leave in the bands, starting from the days you had already used. The article says only that the leave is due during the year, without saying which year.

  • Days 1 to 15 of the year: full pay
  • Days 16 to 25: three quarters of the wage, and days 26 to 35: half
  • Days 36 to 45: a quarter of the wage, and days 46 to 75: unpaid
  • Daily wage = comprehensive monthly wage (basic + regular allowances) ÷ 30

What if I fall ill during my annual leave?

Sick days that fall during annual leave are not counted against the annual leave, under Article 70. The calculator does not look at that overlap: it prices only the sick days you enter.

Which year are the sick leave days counted in?

Article 69 says the leave is due during the year without saying whether that is a calendar year or a year of service. So the calculator asks for the days you used before this leave in the year your employer counts.
