How it's calculated
Under Article 70 of Kuwait's Private Sector Labour Law No. 6 of 2010, a worker earns 30 days of paid annual leave for each year of service. The entitlement does not step up with seniority: one year of service and ten years of service both earn 30 days, unlike Saudi Arabia, where leave starts at 21 days and rises to 30 after five consecutive years.
Public holidays and sick days that fall inside the annual leave do not count against it, so they are not deducted from your balance. In the first year of service, leave is only earned after nine months from the start date, and the balance then builds up for every month you work.
If the employment ends before the balance is used, the leave days earned but not taken are paid out in cash with your final entitlements. The calculator counts completed months only, at 2.5 days a month, subtracts the days you have already taken and multiplies what is left by the daily wage, which is the monthly wage divided by 30.
- 30 days of paid annual leave for each year of service, with no banding by seniority (Article 70)
- 2.5 days per completed month; in the first year leave is only earned after nine months of service
- Public holidays and sick days falling inside the annual leave do not count against it
- Cash-out = unused days × the daily wage (monthly wage ÷ 30)
Worked example
An employee with a monthly wage of 1,000 KWD (800 basic + 200 allowances) has 7 years of service and has taken 20 days of leave.
- Completed months: 7 years × 12 = 84 months
- Days accrued: 84 × 2.5 = 210 days
- Unused balance: 210 − 20 = 190 days
- Daily wage: 1,000 ÷ 30 = 33.33 KWD, so the cash-out is 190 × 33.33 = 6,333.33 KWD
The employee is owed 6,333.33 KWD for the unused balance on leaving, and the annual entitlement stays at 30 days whether the service is one year or ten.
FAQ
How many days of annual leave do I get in Kuwait?
30 paid days for each year of service under Article 70 of Labour Law No. 6 of 2010, with no banding by length of service. That is a minimum, and your contract or company policy may grant more.
Do I earn annual leave in my first year?
Leave in the first year is only earned after nine months of service. After that the balance builds up at 2.5 days per completed month, reaching 30 days over the year.
Are public holidays and sick days deducted from my annual leave?
No. Public holidays and sick days that fall inside your annual leave do not count against it, so your balance is unaffected and you do not lose those days.
Is unused leave paid out in cash?
Yes. When you leave the job, the leave days earned but not taken are paid in cash with your final entitlements, at the daily wage for each unused day.
Do allowances count in the daily wage?
The calculator works out the daily wage from the monthly wage you enter, and our example uses the comprehensive wage (basic + regular allowances) divided by 30. Check your contract or company policy, and if you and your employer disagree, ask the Public Authority of Manpower.
Why does my result differ from my employer's calculation?
This calculator counts completed months only and ignores the odd days beyond them, and it divides the monthly wage by 30 to get the daily rate. Some employers use actual working days or divide by 26, which gives a slightly different figure.
