What does maternity leave pay on 9,000?

An employee on an actual wage of 9,000 SAR (7,000 basic + 2,000 allowances) starts her maternity leave.

  1. Length of the leave: 12 × 7 = 84 days at full pay
  2. Daily wage: 9,000 ÷ 30 = 300 SAR
  3. Maternity leave pay: 84 × 300 = 25,200 SAR

The employee is owed 25,200 SAR for her maternity leave. At least 42 days of it fall after the birth, and it may start no more than 28 days before the expected date.

How long is maternity leave, and how does it fall around the birth?

Under Article 151 of the Saudi Labor Law as amended, a working woman is entitled to maternity leave at full pay for twelve weeks, or 84 days, of which the six weeks after the birth are mandatory. She may place the other six weeks as she chooses, starting from four weeks before the likely date of birth, which is set by a medical certificate attested by a health authority. The text sets no length of service.

The leave is paid on the actual wage, meaning the basic salary plus fixed allowances, because Article 2 makes the wage, wherever the law does not qualify it, the actual wage. The calculator divides the monthly wage by 30, the month that same article defines, and multiplies the daily wage by 84 days.

If less than six weeks of the leave remain after the birth because it came later than the likely date, the days that make up the difference are unpaid leave. In every case the worker may extend the leave by a month without pay. If the child is born sick or with a disability and needs constant care, she is entitled to a month at full pay after the maternity leave, which she may extend by a month without pay. A father gets three days at full pay within seven days of the birth under Article 113.

  • Length of maternity leave: 12 weeks (84 days) at full pay, with no service condition
  • The six weeks after the birth are mandatory, and the leave may start four weeks before the expected date
  • Daily wage = actual monthly wage (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30
  • After it: a month unpaid if she asks, and a father's leave of 3 days at full pay

Questions about maternity leave and its pay

How long is maternity leave under Saudi labor law?

12 weeks (84 days) at full pay under Article 151, of which the six weeks after the birth are mandatory; you may place the other six starting from four weeks before the expected date of birth.

Do allowances count towards maternity leave pay?

Yes. The leave is at full pay, and the wage in the law, where it is not qualified, is the actual wage under Article 2, meaning the basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport.

Is there a minimum length of service for maternity leave?

No. Article 151 as amended sets no length of service, so a worker is entitled to 12 weeks at full pay even if she has only just joined.

What if the birth comes later than expected?

If less than six weeks of the leave remain after the birth because it came after the likely date, the days that make up the six weeks are unpaid leave, under Article 151. The calculator does not cover this, because it depends on the actual date of birth.

Can maternity leave be extended?

Yes, in every case the worker may extend it by a month without pay. If the baby is sick or has a disability and needs constant care, she is entitled to a month at full pay after the maternity leave, and may extend that by a month without pay.

Does a father get leave for a birth?

Yes, three days at full pay within seven days of the birth under Article 113, and the employer may ask for supporting documents.
