How is zakat on salary savings worked out?
- Nisab = 85 × the price of a gram of 24k gold
- Held a full year = savings on the zakat date − savings from the last year
- Due now = held a full year × 2.5%, once it reaches the nisab
- Zakat on all of it on one date = all savings × 2.5%
Symbols
- held a full year
- What has stayed with you a whole year, on which zakat is due once it reaches the nisab (Ibn Baz, fatwa 5783)
- paid early
- The zakat on what you saved within the last year, paid with the rest on the same date before its year completes (Ibn Baz, fatwa 3205)
What is the zakat on 90,000 saved from a salary?
An employee who saves from their salary holds 90,000 SAR on their zakat date each year, 24,000 SAR of it saved within the last year at 2,000 SAR a month. Gold is 519 SAR a gram at 24k.
- Nisab: 85 × 519 = 44,115 SAR
- Held a full year: 90,000 − 24,000 = 66,000 SAR, above the nisab
- Due now: 66,000 × 2.5% = 1,650 SAR
- Paid early on the last year's savings: 24,000 × 2.5% = 600 SAR
- Zakat on all of it on one date: 90,000 × 2.5% = 2,250 SAR
Paying 2,250 SAR on the zakat date covers all the savings: 1,650 SAR due and 600 SAR paid early. Paying each month on its own year instead means 1,650 SAR now, then 50 SAR each time a month's savings completes its year while they are still saved.
Is zakat due on a salary, and when?
Zakat is not due on a salary when it is paid, only on what is saved from it once that reaches the nisab and a year has passed over it. Ibn Baz: once a year has passed over a part of the salary that reaches the nisab, zakat is due on it, and below that none is. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold, and the zakat is a quarter of a tenth: 2.5%.
Because savings from a salary arrive month after month, each month has its own year: what you saved in Ramadan is zakatable the next Ramadan if it is still there, what you saved in Shawwal the next Shawwal, and so on. That is how Ibn Baz explains it, adding that someone who pays on all of it when the first month's year completes may do so, the later months' zakat then being paid early.
Ibn Uthaymeen holds that the better way is to fix one time for your zakat, such as Ramadan, count everything you hold then and pay on it: what has completed its year is paid on time, and what has not is paid early, because nobody can easily tell when each riyal of their salary arrived and whether it is still there. So the calculator gives the zakat on all of it on one date, and shows how much of that was due and how much is paid early.
- No zakat on a salary when you receive it
- Zakat is due on savings once a year has passed over a part of them that reaches the nisab
- Each month has its own year, and all of it may be paid on one date, with what is short of a year paid early
- 2.5% on a lunar year, and 2.577% if the year is counted on the solar calendar
Questions about zakat on salary
Is zakat due on a monthly salary?
Not when you receive it, only on what you save from it once a year has passed. Ibn Uthaymeen: if your monthly salary is spent within its month, no year passes over it and no zakat is due, and if it stays, zakat is due when its year completes. Ibn Baz calls paying zakat on a salary as soon as it is received a weak view.
How do I work out zakat on what I save each month?
Each month has its own year: pay 2.5% of what you saved in a month once a year has passed over it and it is still with you. You may instead pay on all of it when the first month's year completes, the later months' zakat then being paid early (Ibn Baz, fatwa 3205).
Can I pay zakat on all my savings in Ramadan?
Yes, and Ibn Uthaymeen calls it the better way: count what you hold in Ramadan and pay on it. What has completed its year is paid on time, what has not is paid early, and paying zakat early is fine.
When does zakat fall due on my savings?
Once a year has passed over a part of your savings that reaches the nisab, zakat is due on it, and below the nisab none is (Ibn Baz, fatwa 5783). That is why the calculator asks for the last year's savings: what has not been held a year is no part of what is due now, and is paid early if you pay on everything.
What if I spend from my savings now and then?
Each month's savings is zakatable on whatever of it is left when its year completes, as Ibn Baz says. If that is hard to track, Ibn Uthaymeen's advice is to pay on everything you hold at one time, because nobody can easily tell when each riyal of their salary arrived and whether it is still there.
