How is sick leave pay calculated?
- Days 1 to 30: daily wage × 100%
- Days 31 to 90: daily wage × 75%
- Days 91 to 120: unpaid
- Daily wage = (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30
- Pay = days in each band × its share × daily wage

What do 40 sick days pay on 9,000?
An employee on an actual wage of 9,000 SAR (7,000 basic + 2,000 allowances) is off sick for 40 days, with no sick leave taken earlier in the year.
- Daily wage: 9,000 ÷ 30 = 300 SAR
- The first 30 days at full pay: 30 × 300 = 9,000 SAR
- The next ten days at three quarters of the wage: 10 × 300 × 75% = 2,250 SAR
- Total: 9,000 + 2,250 = 11,250 SAR
The employee is owed 11,250 SAR for the sick leave. With 40 days of the year used, any further sick leave in that year pays the next fifty days at three quarters of the wage.
What are the sick leave bands, and which wage pays them?
Under Article 117 of the Saudi Labor Law, a worker who proves an illness is entitled to sick leave at full pay for the first thirty days, at three quarters of the wage for the next sixty days, and without pay for the thirty days after that. The days are counted within one year that starts on the date of the first sick leave, whether the leave was taken in one spell or several, so the year here is neither a calendar year nor a year of service.
The leave is paid on the actual wage, meaning the basic salary plus fixed allowances, because Article 2 makes the wage, wherever the law does not qualify it, the actual wage, and makes a month thirty days unless the contract or the work regulation says otherwise. So the calculator divides the monthly wage by 30 to get the daily wage, then places the days of your leave in the article's bands, starting from the days you had already used.
The law sets no length of service for sick leave, and the illness is proved by a medical certificate from the establishment's doctor or an accredited medical body under Article 41 of the Model Work Regulation. Article 82 bars the employer from ending a worker's service for illness before the sick leave periods are used up, and the worker may ask to join annual leave to sick leave.
- Days 1 to 30 of the year: full pay
- Days 31 to 90: three quarters of the wage (75%)
- Days 91 to 120: leave without pay
- Daily wage = actual monthly wage (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30
Questions about sick leave and its pay
How many days of paid sick leave does Saudi labor law give?
90 paid days a year under Article 117: the first thirty at full pay and the next sixty at three quarters of the wage, then 30 more days without pay, 120 days in all within a year that starts from the first sick leave.
Do allowances count towards sick leave pay?
Yes. Sick leave is paid on the actual wage, meaning the basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport, because Article 2 makes the wage in the law, where it is not qualified, the actual wage.
When does the sick leave year start?
On the date of your first sick leave, not at the start of the calendar year and not on the day you joined. Sick days within that year add up whether they were continuous or broken, so enter the days you had already used before this leave.
Can my employer dismiss me because of illness?
Not before you have used up the sick leave periods the law sets, under Article 82. You may also ask to join your annual leave to your sick leave.
Do I need a medical certificate, and who issues it?
Yes, Article 117 gives the leave to a worker who proves the illness. Article 41 of the Model Work Regulation calls for a medical certificate from the establishment's doctor or from an accredited medical body.
What if the illness is a work injury, or falls during my annual leave?
A work injury has its own rules under the occupational hazards branch of social insurance, so the calculator does not cover it. Sick days that fall during annual leave pause the annual leave until the illness ends, and it then resumes, under Article 26 of the Implementing Regulations of the Labor Law.
