What do 30 sick days pay on a 6,000 basic wage?

An employee on a basic wage of 6,000 QAR, with two years of service, is off sick for 30 days, with no sick leave taken earlier in the service year.

  1. Daily wage: 6,000 ÷ 30 = 200 QAR
  2. The first 14 days at full pay: 14 × 200 = 2,800 QAR
  3. The next sixteen days at half pay: 16 × 200 × 50% = 1,600 QAR
  4. Total: 2,800 + 1,600 = 4,400 QAR

The employee is owed 4,400 QAR for the sick leave. Twelve days of the four half-pay weeks remain in the service year, and anything after them is unpaid.

When is sick leave paid, and on which wage?

Under Article 82 of Qatar Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, a worker is entitled to paid sick leave for each year of service, provided the illness is proved by a certificate from a doctor the employer approves. The leave is not granted until three months have passed since the worker first joined.

The worker is paid in full if the leave does not exceed two weeks; if it runs on, half pay is given for four more weeks, and any extension after that is unpaid until the worker returns to work, resigns or leaves on health grounds. The employer may end the service at the end of the twelfth week if the competent doctor's report shows the worker cannot return, and those weeks do not break continuous service.

Pay during sick leave is worked out on the basic wage under Article 72, so allowances are not part of it. The calculator divides the monthly basic wage by 30 to get the daily wage, which is a convention because the article counts the leave in weeks, then places the days of your leave in the bands, starting from the days you had already used in the service year.

  • No paid sick leave before three months of service
  • The first two weeks (14 days) of the service year: the full basic wage
  • The next four weeks (28 days): half the basic wage
  • After the sixth week: unpaid, until return, resignation or leaving on health grounds

Questions about sick leave in Qatar

How much paid sick leave does Qatar labour law give?

Six weeks for each year of service under Article 82: two weeks at full pay, then four weeks at half pay, with anything longer unpaid until you return to work, resign or leave on health grounds.

Do I get paid sick leave in my first months?

Paid sick leave is not granted until three months have passed since you first joined, under Article 82. The calculator tells you when your service is shorter than that.

Do allowances count towards sick leave pay?

No. Article 72 says a worker's pay during annual or sick leave is worked out on the basic wage, so housing, transport and other allowances are left out unless your contract gives more.

Can my service be ended because of a long illness?

The employer may end your service at the end of the twelfth week of sick leave if the competent doctor's report shows you cannot return to work. The twelve weeks do not break your continuous service.

What medical certificate is needed?

A certificate from a doctor the employer approves, under Article 82. If you resign because of the illness, with the competent doctor's approval, before the six paid weeks end, the employer must pay you the rest of what they were due.

Do separate spells of illness in a year add up?

Article 82 does not say outright that separate spells add up, and the calculator uses the number of earlier days you enter for your service year. If your employer counts differently, check your contract and the company's work rules.
