How is leave pay calculated in Oman?

  1. Annual leave: 30 days, that is 2.5 days a month
  2. Unused balance = accrued − taken
  3. Daily wage = (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30
  4. Leave pay = unused balance × daily wage

What are 70 days of leave worth on 600?

A worker on a basic wage of 500 OMR with 100 OMR of fixed allowances has 3 years of service and has taken 20 days of leave.

  1. Completed months: 3 × 12 = 36 months
  2. Days accrued: 36 × 2.5 = 90 days
  3. Unused balance: 90 − 20 = 70 days
  4. Gross daily wage: (500 + 100) ÷ 30 = 20 OMR
  5. Leave pay: 70 × 20 = 1,400 OMR

The worker is owed 1,400 OMR for the unused balance when service ends, worked out on the gross wage rather than the basic alone.

When is leave earned, and which wage pays it out?

Article 78 of the Labour Law issued by Royal Decree 53/2023 gives a worker annual leave of at least 30 days on the gross wage, and says the leave may not be taken before at least six months from the date the worker joined. That limits when leave is taken, not whether it is earned, so the calculator counts leave from the first month at two and a half days a month.

Article 81 gives the worker the gross wage for the annual leave balance if service ends before it is used up. The gross wage is the basic wage plus all other allowances and stipends paid for the work (Article 1), so fixed allowances go into the figure.

During service, the employer may instead pay the basic wage alone for leave days not taken, if the worker agrees in writing; the calculator does not work out that case. A worker may keep a balance of up to 30 days, unless the leave went unused because the work required it.

  • Annual leave: at least 30 days a year, on the gross wage (Article 78)
  • Not taken before six months of service, but counted here from the first month
  • The balance on leaving is paid on the gross wage (Article 81)
  • Daily wage = (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30

Questions about annual leave in Oman

How many days of annual leave do you get in Oman?

At least 30 days a year on the gross wage, under Article 78 of the Labour Law issued by Royal Decree 53/2023. A contract may give more.

Is leave earned before six months of service?

You may not take leave before six months from the day you joined (Article 78). But the article sets no service before leave is earned, and Article 81 pays the balance if service ends before it is used, so the calculator counts leave from the first month.

Which wage is the leave balance paid on?

The gross wage when service ends (Article 81): the basic wage with all allowances and stipends paid for your work. If your employer pays for untaken days during service instead, it is the basic wage alone, and only with your written agreement.

Can leave be carried over to the next year?

Yes, up to 30 days, unless the leave went unused because the work required it (Article 78). The employer may postpone your leave by up to six months, and you must take at least 30 days of leave once every two years (Article 81).

Can I give up my leave?

No. Article 78 says a worker may not waive their leave in any case. The one exception is in jobs, sectors and categories set by a decision of the minister, where annual leave may be replaced with a work programme better suited to the worker.
