Saudi Regulation of Domestic Workers, Article 22: end-of-service award
What a domestic worker is owed in SAR under Article 22 of their regulation, not the labour law.
Domestic workers are outside Saudi Arabia's labour law and have a regulation of their own, approved by Ministerial Decision 40676. Its Article 22 gives the worker a month's wage for every four consecutive years spent with the same employer, worked out on the last wage. Enter the wage and the service to see what is due.

How is a domestic worker's award calculated?
- Periods = service ÷ 4 years, complete periods only
- Award = periods × one month's wage
- The basis is the last monthly wage
Symbols
- period
- Four consecutive years with the same employer (Article 22)
- wage
- Everything paid to the worker monthly for the work (Article 1), without housing and food
What is the award on 1,500 and nine years?
A domestic worker on 1,500 SAR a month has spent nine consecutive years with the same household, and the contract has ended.
- Complete four-year periods: 9 ÷ 4 = 2 periods
- What is left: one year, which does not count
- Award: 2 × 1,500 = 3,000 SAR
3,000 SAR is due. Twelve years would earn three months, 4,500 SAR, because the third period would be complete.
What goes into it, and what takes it away?
Article 22 of the Regulation of Domestic Workers says the worker is entitled, when the domestic work contract ends, to an end-of-service award of a month's wage for every four consecutive years spent with the employer, with the last wage as the basis. The earning unit is four years rather than one: three years and eleven months earn nothing, and nine years earn two months rather than two and a quarter.
The wage here is everything paid monthly for the work (Article 1). The regulation has no split into basic wage and allowances of the kind the labour law makes, and housing and food are the employer's obligations in kind under Article 15, so they are not added to the wage for this figure.
The award is lost in full only in the cases of Article 26: breaching an essential obligation after a written warning, deliberately causing the employer material loss where the employer reports it within 24 hours, absence from work, obtaining the work by fraud, bad conduct or a breach of honour or trust, and assaulting the employer or a member of the family. A worker who ends the contract keeps the award, though ending it without a legitimate reason may cost two months' wage to the other party under Article 25.
- A month's wage for every four consecutive years (Article 22)
- Worked out on the last monthly wage; housing and food sit outside it
- Under four years earns nothing, and a part period does not count
- Only Article 26 takes the award away; leaving of your own accord does not
- Dues are settled within a week of the contract ending, two weeks where the worker ended it (Article 23)
Questions about domestic workers' end of service
How much is end-of-service pay for a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia?
A month's wage for every four consecutive years with the same household, on the last wage (Article 22 of the Regulation of Domestic Workers). Eight years is two months, twelve years three.
Do years that do not complete a four-year period count?
No. Article 22 pays for every four consecutive years spent, and provides for no fraction of that period, unlike Article 84 of the labour law, which gives a part year in proportion. Seven years of service earn one month.
Is this different from the labour law's gratuity?
Yes, it is a different calculation. Article 7 of the labour law excludes domestic workers and those of their kind from its provisions, so the half-month-for-five-years-then-a-month rule does not apply to them. They have their own regulation, which is what this page works out.
When is the award lost?
Only in the six cases of Article 26: breaching an essential obligation after a written warning, deliberately causing material loss where the employer reports it to the authorities within 24 hours, absence from work, obtaining the work by fraud, bad conduct or a breach of honour or trust, and assaulting the employer or a member of the family.
Do I lose the award if I leave the job?
No. Article 22 attaches the award to the contract ending and does not ask who ended it, and Article 27 lets the worker end it keeping their rights where the employer breached their obligations or assaulted them. But ending the contract without a legitimate reason can cost two months' wage to the other party (Article 25) and the cost of the journey home (Article 24).
When must it be paid?
Within a week of the contract ending, or within two weeks where the worker is the one who ended it, and the employer may deduct any debt owed because of the work (Article 23).
What about leave and the flight home?
Article 12: a worker who has served two years and whose contract is being renewed is entitled to 30 days of leave, and to its cash value at the end of the relationship if it was not taken, as well as a return ticket every two years. Those are separate from the award and this tool does not work them out.
