What do you want to work out?
BHD

The net amount as you write it on the invoice, before VAT is added.

VAT rate

10% since 1 January 2022, per the National Bureau for Revenue. The rate is set by law and is not typed in.

Total including VAT

VAT amount100.000 BHD
Total including VAT1,100.000 BHD
  • Figures are rounded to the currency's smallest unit, and the total is built from the rounded amount and VAT, so the three invoice lines add up exactly.

How is VAT worked out in each direction?

  1. VAT when adding = amount before VAT x 10%
  2. Total = amount before VAT + VAT
  3. Amount before VAT when extracting = total / 1.10
  4. Rounded to three decimals, because the dinar is 1,000 fils

Symbols

Amount before VAT
The net figure the tax is charged on. It is what you type in add mode, and what comes out in extract mode
Total
The amount with the VAT inside it. It is 110% of the net, which is why subtracting the rate from it does not work
Rate
10% by law since 1 January 2022, not a field you fill in; it moves by legislation, not by a setting here

What is the VAT on 1,000 BHD, and the net inside 1,100?

A Manama supplier issues a 1,000 BHD pre-tax invoice for a standard-rated supply, then checks the sum in reverse from the total.

  1. VAT: 1,000 x 10% = 100 BHD
  2. Total: 1,000 + 100 = 1,100 BHD
  3. In reverse: 1,100 / 1.10 = 1,000 BHD before VAT
  4. Extracted VAT: 1,100 minus 1,000 = 100 BHD, the same answer

The invoice reads 1,000 BHD net, 100 BHD VAT and 1,100 BHD total. Subtracting 10% from the total instead of dividing would have shown a net of 990 BHD, an error of 10 BHD.

What is the rate today, and why three decimal places?

Add 10% to a pre-tax amount, or extract the VAT from a tax-inclusive total, at the rate in force in Bahrain since January 2022 and rounded to the fils.

VAT in Bahrain is 10%, in force since 1 January 2022, after the 5% that applied from the start of VAT in January 2019. Bahrain is the only Gulf state to have doubled its rate, which is why this rule carries its own commencement date rather than one shared with its neighbours.

The two directions are not one sum run backwards. Adding VAT multiplies by 10%; taking it out of a tax-inclusive figure divides by 1.10, and the common error is to subtract 10% from the total. On a 1,100 BHD invoice, subtracting gives a net of 990 BHD rather than 1,000, which is 10 BHD short.

The Bahraini dinar divides into 1,000 fils rather than 100, so an invoice is written to three decimal places. This calculator rounds to the fils rather than to two places, because rounding to two drops part of the tax on every line. Registration is mandatory above 37,500 BHD a year and voluntary above 18,750 BHD.

  • VAT when adding = amount before VAT x 10%
  • Amount before VAT when extracting = total / 1.10
  • Rounded to three decimals, because the dinar is 1,000 fils
  • Mandatory registration at 37,500 BHD, voluntary at 18,750 BHD over twelve months

Questions about VAT in Bahrain

What is the VAT rate in Bahrain?

The standard rate is 10%, in force since 1 January 2022. It was 5% from the start of VAT on 1 January 2019, then doubled by an amendment passed in 2021.

How do I extract VAT from a tax-inclusive amount?

Divide the total by 1.10 to get the amount before VAT, then subtract that from the total to get the VAT. Subtracting 10% from the total is a different sum and comes out too low.

Why are the figures shown to three decimals?

Because the Bahraini dinar divides into 1,000 fils, so an invoice is written to three places rather than two. Rounding to two drops part of the tax on every line and leaves the invoice out of balance.

When do I have to register for VAT?

Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed 37,500 BHD over twelve months, and voluntary above 18,750 BHD. Check your own position with the National Bureau for Revenue.

What about invoices that straddle the date the rate rose?

Supplies made before 1 January 2022 carry 5% and those made after carry 10%, under transitional rules issued by the Bureau. This calculator applies only the rate in force today.

Is everything taxed at 10%?

No. Some supplies are zero-rated, such as exports and certain basic goods, and some are exempt, such as property leases and certain financial services. The calculator works at the standard rate only.
